Hair loss and hair breakage are completely different problems — with completely different fixes. Here is how to tell which one you have.

In brief, hair loss originates at the follicle, the strand sheds with a white bulb at the root, hair breakage happens along the shaft, the strand snaps and produces short irregular pieces without a bulb. Both lead to less visible hair, but they require completely different treatments. The white bulb test tells you which one you're dealing with in seconds, and getting it wrong means treating the wrong problem for months. Most people use my hair is falling out to describe all three things hair shedding from the root, hair snapping along the shaft, and gradual thinning of the strand diameter. These are not the same condition. Hair loss and hair breakage are distinct conditions that require different diagnostic and treatment approaches. While hair loss originates from the follicle and often reflects internal health factors, breakage is typically the result of external damage to the hair shaft. Early identification and targeted intervention play a crucial role in maintaining long-term hair health. Using products designed for follicle origin hair loss when the problem is shaft breakage wastes time and money. Spending months on strengthening treatments when the problem is telogen effluvium from iron deficiency delays the investigation that would actually identify the cause. The diagnosis has to come first. How do you tell the difference between hair loss and breakage? The simplest and most reliable method requires nothing more than looking at the strands you find in the bee. Rush, shower, or on your pillow. Hair loss starts at the scalp and often includes strands with a white bulb at the root, while hair breakage occurs along the hair shaft and produces shorter, uneven pieces with no bulb. A full-length strand with a small white or pale club root at one end has completed the telogen resting phase and shed from the follicle naturally. This is what 50, 100 hairs per day look like. An increase in these hairs indicates the follicle is sending more hairs into telegen than usual, which points toward an internal driver, hormonal, nutritional, inflammatory, or stress related. This is the category that the last three months of this series has been addressing. Short, irregular, no bulb equal sign shaft breakage broken strands do not have a white bulb attached. They are shorter, uneven, and often found in variable lengths, from a few centimeters to mid shaft. Breakage hairs may have jagged, frayed, or split ends. They are found more often on pillowcases, in hairbrushes, and around the crown or mid lengths, rather than at the front hairline. The follicle is producing hair normally. The strand is simply not surviving long enough to reach full length before snapping. This is a shaft integrity problem, not a follicle problem. Both at once, more common than most people realize, hair loss and breakage frequently occur simultaneously in the same person. Some E1 with AGIA and regular heat styling may have both follicle origin miniaturization and shaft breakage from thermal protein damage. Someone with telogenofluvium from iron deficiency may also have breakage from the same nutritional deficiency that weakens both follicle function and shaft integrity. If it has a small white bulb, it's a natural shed. If it's short and has jagged ends, it's breakage. Both can be happening at once, meaning there is a problem with both the follicle and the hair shaft. This is why looking carefully at the mix of hairs in your brush matters. White bulb. The single most diagnostic visual marker, present on telegen shed hairs, absent on broken strands. Examining shed hair under a bright light takes 10 seconds and tells you which category you're in. Fixable breakage is the most fixable hair problem. Follicles are healthy, the shaft is weak. Stop the damage, repair the structure, and the problem resolves. No medical investigation required. Investigate follicle origin shedding requires identifying the driver. Hormones, ferritin, thyroid, cortisol, inflammation. Products alone will not resolve it without finding and addressing the cause. What causes hair breakage? Hair breakage happens when the hair shaft loses its strength. Common causes include excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, lack of moisture, mechanical stress, and environmental damage, breakage cause. What's happening to the shaft? Fix heat styling above 200 degrees Celsius, alpha helix keratincon. Verts to beta sheet. Permanent for that section, lower temperature, heat protectant, reduce frequency. Damage is permanent for existing hair. Only new growth can be undamaged. Chemical processing, bleach relaxers, disrupts disulfide bonds in keratin, weakens shaft structurally, bond building treatments, Olaplex type, increase interval between processes, protein treatments, low porosity plus wrong products. Product buildup creates brittle coating that breaks rather than bends. Monthly clarifying shampoo, lightweight humectants, apply to damp, not dry hair. High porosity, open cuticle, moisture enters and leaves too fast, chronically dry, brittle shaft protein treatments every two weeks, sealing layer, oil over cream, reduce wash frequency, hard water mineral deposits, calcium magnesium bind to keratin. Reduce tensile strength by tilde, 8%, monthly chelating shampoo, pre-swim freshwater soak, shower filter, mechanical stress, tight styles, rough towel drying, physical force exceeds shaft tensile strength, snapping at points of maximum tension, microfiber towel, wide tooth comb, loosened styles, satin pillowcase. Can hair breakage cause hair loss? Breakage does not directly cause follicle origin hair loss, the two are mechanically distinct. However, they can create conditions that amplify each other. Traction from tight hairstyles that causes breakage can also, over time, cause traction alopecia, permanent follicle damage at the hairline, which we covered in the June article. Chemical procy.
