Iron deficiency affects approximately 72% of women experiencing hair loss, making it the most common nutritional cause of diffuse hair shedding in women. Yet a substantial proportion of those women will have been told their iron is normal. Because the threshold most labs use to flag deficiency is the threshold for anemia, not the threshold for healthy hair follicle function. Those two numbers are not the same. Optimal ferritin levels for healthy hair growth typically range between 40, 70 NgML, though research suggests levels above 40 Ngml are necessary to prevent hair loss. When ferritin levels drop below 30 Ngml, many individuals experience diffuse hair thinning, increased shedding, and reduced hair diameter. This delay is why iron deficiency hair loss is regularly misattributed to stress, the season, or a product change that happened around the time the shedding was noticed. What ferritin level is optimal for hair growth? The optimal serum ferritin level for preventing hair loss due to iron deficiency is CER60 NgmL with corresponding hemoglobin levels where 13.0g DL. A single ferritin value without these markers can mislead in both directions. Why do women have lower ferritin than men? Ferritin levels are higher in men than in women. In women, ferritin levels increase during menopause and peak after menopause. In high-income countries, approximately 38% of non-pregnant reproductive age women have iron deficiency without anemia. Menstruation is the primary driver. Monthly blood loss consistently depletes iron stores in women who are not actively replenishing them through diet or supplementation. Pregnancy and breastfeeding add further depletion. This is why premenopausal women are disproportionately represented in iron deficiency hair loss, and why ferritin testing is more informative in pre-menopausal women than in men or postmenopausal women. How to supplement iron for hair loss? If your ferritin is below the hair optimal range after testing. Ferrous sulfate 325 mg, taken on an empty stomach with vitamin C, which significantly enhances iron absorption, is the standard supplementation approach.
